Spaghetti wHoly-Lazy

You find yourself making less healthy choices, simply because you're too busy?

Well, this lazy recipe takes as much time as cooking a batch of spaghetti ...

or brushing your teeth, really, really, really well ...

or getting dressed, really, really, really slowly.


UNLESS you are one of those people that changes outfits 5 times before leaving the house, only to realize upon opening the door that you made a horrible mistake and change outfits 5 more times.


In that case you have enough time to make this dish 5 times. I know, because I live with someone like that.


Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 200 g or 6-7 oz of whole wheat, brown rice, lentil or any other wholesome spaghetti*

  • 300 g or 10 oz. of tomatoes

  • 200 g or 6-7 oz. of mushrooms

  • 2 handful of greens (kale, spinach, Chinese flowering cabbage, green cabbage, bok choy, etc.

  • A handful of peanut chunks or broken peanuts**

  • 1 cm chunk of garlic



  • 1 small onion

  • 1 small carrot

  • 1 clove of garlic



*Nowadays there are many places that sell more than just wheat-made spaghetti.

Rice, lentils, beans, buckwheat, spelt, kamut are just one of the things that are used to make 'pasta'. And some of them are gluten-free as well.

Legumes (beans and lentils) have the added benefit of slowing down glucose absorption and blunting any insulin spikes as a result thereof, EVEN THE NEXT MORNING. This is sometimes also called "the second-meal effect"

** The recipe calls for peanut chunks sprinkled on top, but peanuts or peanut butter can also be added into the sauce. 


  1. Get out your favored spaghetti. This spaghetti in this dish was made from lentils, but you can use combinations as well, if you have options.

  2. Add the spaghetti to large pan.

  3. Check the box for the cooking time.

  4. Let's take an average cooking time of ten minutes which is about the time you need on the toilet when you're constipated.

  5. Don't lose your appetite, focus.

  6. We're getting to the point soon.

  7. Bring enough water to a boil in a kettle to fully submerge the spaghetti.

  8. Add hot water to kettle

  9. Add boiling water to pan.

  10. If you think you might burn yourself, step away from the stove and order take out (do ask if they have whole grain spaghetti options.)

  11. Let it come to a boil (this will only happen if you turned on the stove.

  12. Once it boils, in the name of Zeus, turn down the heat and put on a lid. 100 ˚C = 100 ˚C. More bubbles doesn't mean it's going to be above a 100˚.

  13. Ignore the importance of #12 and risk to be struck by lightning.

  14. Chop up the mushrooms in fairly small bits.

  15. Add them to the spaghetti.

  16. Cut up the greens.

  17. Add them to the pan, a few minutes before the spaghetti is done.

  18. Prepare the tomatoes for blending.

  19. The sauce doesn't need to be cooked, but if you are going to add onion or garlic or carrot (add them to the blender as well), please pay extra attention to # 29.

  20. If you don't have peanut chunks, you can add peanut butter to the blender now as well.

  21. Add ginger.

  22. Blend it up smooth or chunky, depending on your preference.

  23. If you didn't f*ck up so far, congrats. It is time to add the greens to the spaghetti.

  24. Bring everything back to a boil. Zeus temporarily allows you to turn up the heat now.

  25. Greens are done in a minute or two.

  26. Before you plan on draining the water, check if spaghetti is done.

  27. Drain everything. I hope you have a strainer of some sort. If you don't, ask one of the kids to drain the water for you by taking off the lid just enough for the water to sneak through. Chances you will burn yourself are minimized this way.

  28. Be sure to take a few steps back though while your beloved child is handling hot fluids.

  29. After straining you can add the sauce to the pan and bring it to a boil (if you added onion, garlic or carrot).
    If you add those ingredients better boil first. Otherwise the sauce is okay to use straight away after blending.

  30. Only takes a minute for sauce to reach a boil.

  31. Once it boils add the pasta and other ingredients.

  32. Add peanut chunks.

  33. Mix it and you're ready to serve.

  34. Serve.

  35. Add peanut chunks, if you have.

  36. Bon appetite.
